DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY

The Department of Botany of Vivekananda College has a longstanding history. Our Department was first formally established in 1984.The main aim of our Department is to make the students of fossilized rural mindset into academicians of enormous potentiality. The fast changing technological scenario poses to the Institute a challenge of continuously updating its curriculum and faculty to be able to provide state-of-the art education to the students. Changes, both major and subtle, have been made by our Department, to be better prepared for tomorrow.

The Department started functioning with two members of faculty namely Prof. R. Bothi and Prof. P. Eswara Bai. Dr. S. Saravana Babu joined as a member of faculty in 1984. Two other members of faculty namely Dr. R. Meena and Prof. D. Vijayakumari also appointed in the Department.  In 1986 Dr. R. Thirumal Thangam appointed in the Department. At present our Department has four faculty members. Dr. R. Thirumal Thangam is the Head of the Department. The succeeding faculty members of the Department are Dr. H. Prabhavathy, Prof. K. Krishnasamy and Prof. K. Sruthi. Our Department staff members take responsibility and care for our student’s discipline and studies.

GUIDESHIP AND MINOR PROJECTS

Dr. R. Meena and Dr. R. Thirumal Thangam are research guides of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. Under the supervision of Dr. R. Meena, the research scholar M. Amutha awarded Doctoral Degree. Dr. R. Thirumal Thangam guided two M. Phil. scholars namely Tmt. R. Sarasubathi from Alagappa University, Karaikudi and Tmt. Akilambikai from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University.  Dr. R. Thirumal Thangam worked as a principal investigator of a U.G.C. funded minor research project entitled “Invitro Studies on Sugarcane by using SLF” in the year 2008.

ORIENTATION AND REFRESHER PROGRAMMES

The Orientation Programme is intended to inculcate in the young lecturers the quality of self-reliance through awareness of the social, intellectual and moral environment as well as to discover self-potential and confidence. The orientation programmes contribute to the teachers about the awareness of the problems of the Indian society and the role of higher education to achieve desired goals in national development. The participation in Orientation Programme and Refresher Course is mandatory requirement for career advancement. Dr. R. Meena, Dr. R. Thirumal Thangam, Dr. H. Prabhavathy, Prof. K. Krishnasamy had participated in various UGC supported Orientation Programmes and Refresher Courses for Teachers conducted by UGC-Academic Staff Colleges (UGC-ASCs) & UGC – Refresher Course Centres (UGC-RCCs) conducted by various Universities all over Tamil Nadu. 

LIBRARY

Our college library stacked with 612 reference books related to the subject of Botany of various authors. These books are used by the members of the Department and lent to students who cannot afford to buy books.
